Biographie
Born in 1942 in the former Soviet Union to a Ukrainian-Mennonite heritage, I was born during a time when millions were fleeing from Nazi and Communist brutality. In 1948, we were fortunate to migrate as refugees from Displaced Person (DP) camps in Germany to Manitoba, where we began a new life in Canada.
My academic journey began at the University of Manitoba, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1963. I then advanced my education, earning a Master’s degree in Geography and Regional Planning from the University of Waterloo in 1967, followed by a PhD in Geography and Regional Economics from the University of Florida in 1969.
Professional Career
My professional career has been dedicated to education, research, and community development. I taught Economic Geography at the University of Western Kentucky from 1969 to 1970 before joining the Department of Geography at the University of Windsor in 1970, where I worked until 2003. My research focused on the comparative economic development of countries in Europe and Asia, as well as planning for retirees and the recreation sector.During my tenure at Windsor, I became deeply involved in environmental issues, initially working with Pollution Probe in Windsor. This involvement led to international research collaborations with universities in Germany, Ireland, and Ukraine. It also took me to Nanjing, China, where I assessed the effectiveness of their development policies. Additionally, I engaged in discussions with local academics about the challenges arising from a polluted Yangtze River.
In 2014, I served as an international observer during the Ukrainian Federal Election, gaining unique insight into the challenges of transitioning from a state-run economy to a democratic, market-based economy. These challenges included entrenched corruption, resistance from oligarchs, a lack of productivity and accountability, Russian propaganda, environmental degradation, and a society fearful due to the absence of democratic safeguards. Throughout my career, I have used my fluency in German, Ukrainian, Mennonite, and some Russian to connect with diverse communities.
Community Involvement and Values
Upon retiring, my wife, Mary Fraser Reid, and I moved to her ancestral home in Riverton, Pictou County, where we have remained active in the community. I have contributed to various organizations, including the Nova Scotia Voluntary Planning Task Force, the Nova Scotia Gaelic Council, and the Executive of the Pictou County Food Bank. Additionally, I have volunteered with the Ship Hector Museum and served on the Board of the Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners and Operators Association, as well as the East River Valley Community Development Association.Throughout my life, I have remained committed to economic sustainability, community, democracy, accountability, and environmental protection. My experiences have shaped my belief in the need for a more equitable and environmentally-conscious Canada that prioritizes the well-being of all Canadians and future generations.
A Vision for the Future
As a candidate for the Green Party of Canada, I believe in an economy that works for everyone, not just the few. I am committed to advocating for clean energy solutions, protecting our natural resources, upholding democracy and sovereignty, ensuring fiscal responsibility, making housing more affordable, and supporting communities across Canada. Now more than ever, we must invest in green technologies, promote sustainable agriculture, and implement policies that protect the environment for future generations. Policies that prioritize well-paid, sustainable jobs that allow families and individuals to enjoy a good quality of life.
With my background in teaching, research, and community engagement, I am eager to bring a thoughtful, evidence-based approach to the federal government. Together, we can build a more sustainable, compassionate, and just Canada that reflects the values of environmental stewardship and community empowerment.
Join me in working toward a brighter, greener economic future!
